Our first Guardian dogs were Anatolian Shepherds and, as a breed, these dogs are probably closest to our heart. They are simply unparalleled in terms of intelligence and nobility of character. Although Sam, Buba and Seegar are no longer with us, we will always value the time we shared and their careful vigilance over our herd.

Our Maremmas - Moses and Luke are the current caretakers of our goats and have also proved themselves invaluable as herd guardians. They are undoubtedly milder tempered than the Anatolians and presented us with fewer challenges during the adolescent phase of their lives.

Moses and Luke

Both are charming, gentle creatures who tolerate all kinds of nasty behavior on the part of the goats they so selflessly protect.  They’ve been hooked, prodded, butted and chased by miserable old does. They’ve had their feed dishes trampled and overturned but never have I seen them even so much as curl their lips in retaliation.  The Anatolians boundaries were a little tighter.

Guard dog Athena Guard dog - Athena

We are thrilled with our new dog, Athena, who comes to us from our good friends Yvonne & Craig Tucker at Smoke Ridge. She’s growing into one of those wonderful dogs who are gentle and easy to handle while also being a diligent guardian who (thankfully) hates big birds!

Guard dog - Alex
Meet the newest addition, Alex, a wonderful goat guardian who comes to us from Brian & Katie Payne of Keri Rose in Scandia.

Dillinger the yard dog

Dillinger is our yard dog – a blend of Irish Wolfhound, Bouvier and Greyhound. Once the fastest thing on four legs – he’d outrun the coyotes and leave them eating his dust, shaking their heads in bewilderment. He’s absolutely the best buddy anyone could ask for – bar none!!

We have 7 new additions to our guardian group - puppies born to Athena and Alex on August 18th, 2008.  They do like their chow.
